Allegheny West Artist Pays Tribute to Notable Women of Pittsburgh and Vicinity
"When I moved to Allegheny West in 2015, I had no idea I was moving to the birthplace of some of the most influential and creative women in America."
Northside-based artist Doris Short refers to her artwork as “Notable Women of Pittsburgh and Vicinity”, the first series of three silkscreen prints.
The silkscreens portray three stunning women printed with gold and silver metallic ink and gives a better-late-than-never tribute to past Notable Women of Pittsburgh.
Her inspiration is based on the book, “Notable Men of Pittsburgh and Vicinity”. The book was published in the early 1900's all over the country and only included notable men. The concept for the prints pays tribute to the Notable Women from Pittsburgh and the impact they had on art, literature and culture. The first series is called Notable Women of Pittsburgh and vicinity; Series 1; Allegheny West (former Allegheny City, North Side). The prints includes:
Gertrude Stein (1874 – 1946) An American novelist, poet, playwright, and art collector. She hosted a Paris salon for the leading figures of modernism in literature and art, such as Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sinclair Lewis, Ezra Pound, and Henri Matisse.
Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876 – 1958) An American writer, "the American Agatha Christie", although her first mystery novel was published 14 years before Christie's first novel in 1920.
Mary Cassatt (1844 – 1926) An American painter and printmaker. She befriended Edgar Degas and later exhibited among the Impressionists.
Also unique about the prints, they are printed on the North Side through a collaboration with Artists Image Resource (AIR), an artist run, non-profit print and imaging organization established in 1996 to serve as a laboratory for artists, educators and the community.
Ms. Short's artwork has been accepted to the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival’s Juried Visual Art Exhibition. The 2017 Juried Visual Art Exhibition showcases a selection of new work by some of the most talented members of Pittsburgh’s vibrant creative community. This year’s show features 54 works by 50 artists selected by the jurors from a pool of nearly 600 submissions. The exhibit will take place June 2 - 11 in the Trust Arts Education Center, 805/807 Liberty Avenue, in the heart of the Cultural District and is open to the public. A public opening/Meet the Artists will take place Friday, June 2, 5-7pm.
Ms. Short is an artist, designer, and educator based on the North Side in Pittsburgh and credits her Scandinavian design heritage as the inspiration and influence for her success with her passion for art, history, and design.
